LIGHTING TECHNIQUES

Nightfall brings landscapes to life.  A pathway or patio bathed in soft light creates a serene setting.  Create and ambience of dramatic beauty by shadowing or highlighting trees, shrubs and plants.  The following outdoor lighting techniques will expand your living space and enable you to create an atmosphere of comfort and security anytime of the year.

Path Lighting

There is perhaps nothing more beckoning than a well lit path or walkway.  Path lighting should be staggered and not create a runway effect.  Path lighting should illuminate an area clearly, avoiding glare.  As an added benefit, Path, Walkway or Garden lighting provides a safe walkway and adds to your homes security.

Uplighting

Uplighting can provide dramatic effects when used sparingly.  Service mounted or recessed lighting will illuminate branches or architecture to provide an interesting point of visual interest.

Silhouetting

The opposite of shadowing, you can create a silhouette of a tree or object by reflecting light off a vertical surface behind it.  Just position a light behind and below the object to create a spectacular silhouette.

Shadowing

If you have a tree or statue with a striking profile in front of a wall or other surface, shadowing will be a very elegant way to add some drama to your exterior.  By changing the intensity of the light and the distance from the objects, the size and shape of the shadows can be varied.

Moonlighting

If you have medium to large size trees, placing one or two low voltage lights on the second or third tier of branches and angling the light through, will create an artificial moonlight effect.

Downlighting

This technique is similar to moonlighting.  Several fixtures placed high in a tree or on an eve creates attractive patterns through the branches.  Use this technique sparingly.

Spotlighting

Position intense and focused lights near the base of a tree, statue, entranceway or architectural feature.  This technique is very compelling but should be used sparingly.

Spreadlighting

Spread Lighting will highlight a variety of textures and shapes that are found in your garden, or edging and ground cover where it meets the lawn.  This will enhance your nighttime appeal.

Grazing

Lights are placed to shine across architectural features, whether natural or man-made, such as a brick wall.  The light will catch the high points of the surface while creating shadows in the low spots.

Cross Lighting

This lighting variation us two or more lighting sources from different directions.  This technique is wonderful to show off unique trees or beautiful statues.  The multiple beams of light produce softer shadows and reveal more detail.

Step/Dark Lighting

This lighting will shed focused illumination to steps and decks which ads safety and security to these areas.
